Finnish director Elia Koskimies recently released the video “I’ve Only Just Begun”, illustrating the struggle of LGBT people in Russia. Dedicated to Nikolai Alexeyev and Pussy Riot, the short film features haunting visuals full of blood, rage and symbolism – making it hard very to forget. Here’s hoping the message will hit home.
What I really love about this film is that it was made, produced and paid for by normal people, not some organisation trying to win positive PR, and everyone involved volunteered.
It’s been said so many times before but much like Koskimies, I’ll say it again. It’s about time we stop thinking of the Russian people as those poor, oppressed vodka drinkers silently living under constant censorship – that’s not who they are, who we are. It’s about time we join the revolution. Russia’s only just begun.
